New Global Workforce Study 2007 - How motivated are employees at companies?
According to the results of a study recently published by the consultancy firm Towers Perrin, which interviewed 86,000 employees in 18 countries, only one in five employees at international companies is motivated. Despite the fact that 21 percent display above-average commitment to their companies, no less than 38 percent reported being disillusioned and noncommited.
The results of the study are of particular interest when examined on a country-by-country basis. Mexicans are revealed as having a particularly high motivation level, followed by Brazilians, Indians and US Americans. Surprisingly, the last three places are occupied by the Japanese, South Koreans and Hong Kong Chinese, respectively. Employees in European countries are also considerably below the global average when it comes to workplace commitment. On a positive note, Germany is well-positioned in comparison with the European average. However, only 17 percent of the 3,058 German employees questioned are highly motivated, while a mere 34 percent reported little or no commitment.
Over all, the study sends a clear signal to all HR managers that they should endeavour to raise moderately committed employees, in particular, to the ranks of the committed by pursuing staff development policies oriented towards the individual.
